How to develop resilient cities?

Given the developments in the last couple of weeks, one question rises to the top: ‘how can we develop resilient cities?’

Cities have to be prepared for health crises like pandemics, but also other threats like climate change, natural disasters or cyber attacks in the future. Resilience is defined as the ability to adapt, transform and survive  acute shocks. It means, in other words, being prepared for expected and unexpected challenges. Urban resilience, as a concept, refers to the holistic approach and collective capacity of a city. This includes individuals, communities, institutions, businesses – and systems within a city.

The 100 Resilient Cities initiative identified a framework for urban resilience. The intention behind it is to better understand the potential shocks a city can face, and to better address these challenges – for example, when designing city projects and policies. In turn, their City Resilience Framework explores four different dimensions: Health & Wellbeing; Economy & Society; Infrastructure & Environment; and Leadership & Strategy.
