Solartes is developing a unique smart material that harvests and stores solar energy during the day and releases the energy as heat during the night. Integrated into the building skin, the Solartes material could reduce the need for heating and cooling and potentially cut down energy consumption and emissions of buildings.
VELUX and Solartes explored the endless possibilities that smart molecules offer – in this case, harvesting and storing solar energy during the day and releasing as heat after sunset. By delaying the heat of the morning sun to the cool evening, the Solartes material could drastically improve VELUX’s window insulation – increasing comfort whilst cutting energy consumption as well as the lifetime emissions of buildings.
